Pulleyn Transport: The Art and Business of Delivering

February 12, 2024

Pulleyn Transport, a leader in specialized temperature-controlled logistics and storage in the UK, has recently become part of CubeCold Europe, a rapidly expanding pan-European cold storage platform.

In a recent conversation, key figures of Pulleyn Transport, including founder Adrian Pulleyn, his son and Director Ryan Pulleyn, and Manager Tom Wakefield, shared insights into the company’s evolution and ethos.

“Whatever the load, you can trust Pulleyn to transport or store the extraordinary and the ordinary, safely, securely, and on time whenever you need us.”

This is Pulleyn’s promise to its customers today.

And, indeed, with a fleet of 30 specialized temperature-controlled vehicles and 5,800 pallet positions in storage facilities, Pulleyn caters to a diverse range of needs.
Their services extend from transporting frozen goods and medical equipment to handling delicate items like fine art, antiques, and musical instruments. As a family-run business that has weathered recessions and evolving markets, Pulleyn credits its success to a focus on customer needs, business fundamentals, technological innovations, and, most importantly, its team.

“I can walk around the yard here and learn more about the business by walking around in the yard than anyone else would ever tell me,” says founder Adrian Pulleyn. “You know, it’s because the driver said this, the driver said that. You smile, you laugh, you joke with them and that’s how you build a company.”

Adrian Pulleyn’s journey in transportation began at 17. His early experiences ranged from being a meat porter to a truck driver, and even working for Firestone, transporting Formula 1 tyres around Europe and other parts of the world.

“I went from being a truck driver to working for Firestone. And I had never changed a tyre in my life. I went from very very basic stuff to something quite glorious and lots of fun,” recalls Adrian.

This experience provided him with valuable insights into the documentation and paperwork involved in international transportation which proved helpful when, in 1976, he started his own express courier company, focusing on the computer electronics market.

Despite initial challenges, Adrian persisted, and the company started to gain traction. They began offering services to Paris and other parts of Europe, leveraging their knowledge of European routes and documentation.

Reflecting on the company’s early days, Adrian shares, “When I first started, it was the era of the computers. We were running an express courier company… people would call us up in the middle of the night and say we’ve got a machine down in Aberdeen, can you come and collect this part… and you’re on your way to Aberdeen.”

This agility in addressing urgent customer needs shaped the company’s ethos of adaptability and customer-centred service which remains at the core of Pulleyn’s business operations today.

Diversification and adaptability

As global markets and industries evolved, Pulleyn navigated the changes, adapting along with them. Adrian’s ability to anticipate the shifts and quickly adjust to accommodate new demands has been crucial in making the company the industry the leader it is today.

Pulleyn Transport saw great value in diversifying and offering its customers a wide range of solutions. This diversification proved to be a key factor in the company’s success, providing a buffer against fluctuations in individual markets.

“Our view has always been that you have to have three or four or five different strings to your bow,” says Adrian.

“So, we had a packing shop, we had dry storage, we had cold storage, we had chilled storage, we had refrigerated trucks, we had specialist vehicles for doing installation for electronic goods. You know, if ever one or two of those were down, the other three were up and next year you’d have two of those down.”

“The balance was right and that’s why we’ve always done well.”

Understanding the business from the ground up

Pulleyn’s success is rooted in its team. Everyone at the company has worked through all the aspects of the business and this hands-on approach is seen as a key factor in the company’s success.

“Everyone has come along, everyone has worked through the business,” notes Adrian. “They haven’t come in at the top. Because if they had, they wouldn’t understand the business.”

“That’s the key to where we’ve all come from,” adds Ryan Pulleyn. “I think I must have had diesel in my blood as a young kid. I came straight from school. It’s all I wanted to do. We’ve all been through all areas – working out in the yard, cleaning the trucks, working the warehouse, working the packing shop.”

“Our drivers are the face of our company,” notes Tom Wakefield, the General Manager. “They are the people that interact most with the customers. If they are providing a bad reputation, then our reputation gets tarnished. A driver has got as much power as the person at the top.”

This philosophy of nurturing an in-depth understanding of the business at all levels has enabled Pulleyn to build a robust and competent team, capable of handling any requirement their clients might have quickly and efficiently.

Commitment to quality and customer service

And, of course, Pulleyn prides itself on its exceptional customer service.

The company has built strong relationships with its clients by consistently delivering high-quality, tailored services. This has not only fostered loyalty but has also established Pulleyn as a trusted name in the logistics industry.

Indeed, many of the company’s customers have been with them for a long time, and these relationships often extend beyond the professional realm.

“They are not just customers. They are almost like an extension. Extended friends if you like. We’ve got each other’s backs,” adds Tom.

This philosophy is embedded in the company’s culture, where every client interaction is seen as an opportunity to strengthen these bonds.

The Pulleyn team, led by the guiding principle of ‘nothing is too difficult,’ consistently goes the extra mile to ensure client satisfaction.

Talking about one recent episode, Ryan Pulleyn recalls, “One of our larger pharma customers, experienced a freezer outage on a Friday night. They were facing a potential loss of around 20 million pounds worth of stock. We supplied six vehicles within three hours, and all the stock was recovered and returned to our freezer store that evening, with no risk to the product.”

“And that’s something you can’t put a price on.”

Joining CubeCold

Pulleyn Transport was among the first acquisitions by CubeCold, marking a significant step in CubeCold’s ambitious growth strategy across Europe.

With its exclusive pharma logistics knowledge, Pulleyn is set to play a pivotal role in extending that expertise to other members of the group.

Significant opportunities exist for cross-selling and collaboration between companies within the group, resulting in substantial cross-selling activities between the UK and the Netherlands. CubeCold looks forward to expanding these opportunities to additional locations.

Now that Pulleyn Transport has joined CubeCold, plans are underway to develop a new temperature-controlled warehouse at Theale which will add 22,922 pallets of frozen storage to their existing capacity.

In 2023 CubeCold’s network expanded to 18 facilities, which are projected to provide over 250,000 pallet spaces once the greenfield projects are fully operational.

In addition to the storage capacity, CubeCold operates a fleet of 85 reefer trucks and employs about 300 coworkers.

CubeCold is aiming to increase its pallet capacity to over 700,000 across Europe, focusing on strategic locations such as ports, logistic hubs, and areas with high production and consumption volumes, to better serve the evolving needs of the market.
